Rebuilding...
In 2001, 16% of American children
lived in families with incomes below the poverty threshold. With more than
2.3 million grandparents raising their grandchildren, the heads of many of
these households couldn't keep up with repairs either by themselves or by
hiring professionals.
Together...
In 2002, Rebuilding
Together's rehabilitation of homes and non-profit community centers and
childcare facilities helped 52,970 children have a warm, dry, and secure
place to grow up. Many homes with kids were among the 3,180 in which RT
volunteers upgraded electrical wiring in 2002, eliminating fire hazards
and the risk of electrical shock. More were among the 870 homes that were
without heat until RT showed up, among the 3,480 that received plumbing
repairs, and among the 500 in which new stoves replaced old
non-functioning ones. Also in 2002, Rebuilding Together volunteers
nationwide installed 6,080 smoke alarms--simple, lifesaving
improvements--many in homes of families with young children.
A Testimony...
"Every day when I
get up I have to make sure I'm not dreaming. It's amazing! I was raised in
an orphanage and was taught to love one another and help each other. I
hope next year I can volunteer and help make someone as happy as you have
made my son and me."
